NAPALM DEATH begins tracking guitars for new album

24th July 2014

British/American grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH have begun tracking guitars for their follow-up to 2012's "Utilitarian" at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England with producer Russ Russell. An early 2015 release via Century Media Records is expected.

The band performed a brand new song, "Dear Slum Landlord", on April 10 at the Roadburn festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

"Utilitarian" sold around 2,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD debuted at No. 14 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

NAPALM DEATH's previous album, 2009's "Time Waits For No Slave", opened with around 1,800 units to land at No. 19 on the Heatseekers chart.

"Utilitarian" was released on February 27, 2012 in Europe and February 28, 2012 in North America via the band's longtime partner, Century Media Records.

Asked in a recent interview with MetalPR.com about what it's been like to work with various different record labels over the years, NAPALM DEATH vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway said: "You've gotta remember, with NAPALM, it was always on our own terms. Because the problem is, bands… Sometimes if you're a newer band, they go, perhaps, into an arrangement with a label thinking that, 'Oh, we can't upset things, because we're only a new band and they'll just disown us.' But if you can't be happy knowing that you're doing what was your creative plan to do, then there's surely something wrong with that; there has to be. So at any stage, NAPALM was always, like, with the labels, if we felt something was fundamentally wrong, we would say, 'No. It's not happening. We're not doing it. Forget it. It's not gonna happen.' So we always maintained that and we've always set that precedent. Every time we've walked into a record label, we've always said, 'Look, we know what we're doing, and we know how we need to do things. Sure, you've got your things that you need to do, but creatively and stuff, we know best. And that's what we're gonna do. And if there's anything that's ethically not right, or doesn't feel right, then we just won't do it.' And we don't do it in a threatening way; it just becomes a common understanding. And it works for us. But bands have gotta realize that… If I was in a new band, I would rather be in a band and be cut away from a record label than having to be in a situation where I wasn't happy with how they were putting the band forward, if they tried to interfere with the sound of the band. It's not worth it. It's not worth being unhappy in your situation. You may as well cut loose and start again."

NAPALM DEATH – Release special Roadburn festival EP and charity Cardiacs cover-download!

2nd April 2014

After a successful run of dates all across Europe including shows with Hatebreed and The Exploited, Grindcore legends NAPALM DEATH are proud to announce 2 very special projects that have been in the works recently.

First of all and as of today, NAPALM DEATH are launching a special cover song of the track “”To Go Off And Things” by the Cardiacs via their bandcamp site as charity download.

NAPALM DEATH’s bass-player Shane Embury checked in to comment as follows: "Since I was blessed with being introduced to CARDIACS way back in 1986 they have been one of my favorite bands of all time! Getting to meet and become friends with Tim Smith, the musical genius behind it all, over the years was an added bonus. Tim always struck me as a person with a massive heart, who had a very pure and innocent view of the world in which we live in - something i totally related to, as the world can be a dark place - he radiated happiness. We shared many fun and elaborate conversations after CARDIACS shows in the early 90's and I loved every minute of every conversation with him. I could go on and on for hours about how amazing his music is and the immense influence it has had on my life but suffice to say this cover of "To Go Off And Things" that we have recorded is in tribute to the brilliance that is Tim Smith - it is the least we can do for a man who has given us so much.

Tim has unfortunately been severely unwell for a few years now and we hope with this recording made available to everyone for download on our bandcamp site for only £1 (you can pay more if your heart so desires!) we can help raise some money to go towards Tim's rehabilitation! We hope you like our version of the song and find it in your heart to donate something towards such a worthy cause...Thanks for taking the time to read this.”

Metal Hammer UK’s Dom Lawson penned the following writing to enhance the launch:

“Cardiacs. The greatest band that ever walked the Earth. The greatest sound that ever entered my ears. The greatest. Ever. Now and forever.

For those who know about Cardiacs, nothing further needs to be said. For those who don’t? Well, what a glorious world of life-affirming and miraculous music awaits you. Even though chief Cardiac and undisputed Lord Of All Genius And Musical Splendour – the inimitable Tim Smith – has been severely unwell for a number of years, the music he wrote and performed with Cardiacs remains as vital and vibrant as ever. It’s all brilliant. Every last note. It will make you smile, laugh, dance, cry, explode with joy and wonder and magic and glory. And greatness. Always greatness. Great.

NAPALM DEATH are another one of the greatest bands ever to walk the Earth, but even they know that Cardiacs are the greatest of them all. Hence this cranium-decimating cover of one of Tim Smith’s spikiest and snottiest creations, To Go Off And Things, recorded in tribute to the man (and the band) but also as a humble gesture to raise funds for Tim’s ongoing rehabilitation. Not just because the world would be an immeasurably better place if he was able to make some MORE amazing music – but also because Tim has earned our love and respect. Worthy of laudation. The greatest. Ever.

Listen to NAPALM DEATH’s version of ‘To Go Off And Things’. Then go and listen to every Cardiacs song ever recorded. And then go and listen to every NAPALM DEATH song ever recorded. Go off and things. Listen. To the greatest band that ever walked the Earth. Ever.

Now and forever. Cardiacs. Always. The greatest.”

In other news, NAPALM DEATH are pleased to announce the release of a limited and exclusive vinyl 12” EP entitled “Our Pain Is Their Power” to commemorate their very special Roadburn Festival appearance on April 10th. Here is the press release from Roadburn Festival about it:

The Roadburn only vinyl releases have become a tradition over the last few years. Proceedings started in 2012 with the Voivod – Live At Roadburn 2011 LP and the Ulver Roadburn EP, followed last year by Dread Sovereign’s 'Pray To The Devil In Man' EP and the Godflesh live Streetcleaner set. This year is no exception, and we once more present a special release for you: In conjunction with the special live set concentrating on the slower, painful, dirgy elements of NAPALM DEATH at this year’s festival, we will release NAPALM DEATH’s “Our Pain Is Their Power” EP to commemorate their appearance at Roadburn 2014 on Thursday, April 10th.

NAPALM DEATH’s “Our Pain Is Their Power” EP collects those slower tracks that drip with sonic anguish from the last few albums onto one EP in a one-time run of 500 copies, to be sold at the Roadburn Festival 2014.

The tracklist is as follows:

Side A:

1. Persona Non Grata
2. Smear Campaign
3. Atheist Runt

Side B:

1. Morale
2. Our Pain Is Their Powe
3. Weltschmerz (Extended Apocalyptic Power)

More details can be found here: www.roadburn.com

NAPALM DEATH vocalist Mark 'Barney' Greenway checked in as follows about the release: "I think it's fair to say that live and on album NAPALM DEATH has always had more of an emphasis on a bare bones approach - just hit the 'go button' and it should all just about stay on the rails. However, there are other layers to the band and recently we've been in situations with more potential to pluck those from our repertoire. So, this EP gives you a significant flavour of that - as will the live performance. Although the music isn't entirely identical, I feel the moroseness and sheer desperate bludgeon of early Swans is a big factor for us in creating this different type of mood. Hopefully we can emulate that kind of power."

NAPALM DEATH – team up with artist Keith Harrison for special performance; live stream on Friday, Nov 29!

29th November 2013

NAPALM DEATH & KEITH HARRISON’s live performance collaboration is taking place on Friday 29 November! Originally planned to feature at the V&A Museum (London) in March, the Bustleholme project has been given a new life amongst the Modernist setting of the De La Warr Pavillion.

A groundbreaking project which sold out in less than 12 hours will see the band come together with ceramicist Keith Harrison, to depict and destroy a custom built installation during a one off live performance. Now rehoused in a grander setting expect no limitations imposed upon what will no doubt be one of the most important events of the day/week/month/year/decade.

This event will be streamed LIVE from 7pm (UK time) / 20:00 CET on!

The band will play a special live set through an experimental sculptural sound system constructed by Harrison. The structures will potentially disintegrate as the performance progresses.

Keith Harrison, V&A Ceramics Resident: “My interest in Napalm Death started in the late eighties when as a teenager in Birmingham I would listen to John Peel’s evening radio show when they would appear out of nowhere in jaw dropping fashion, sometimes for no more than a few seconds.

The raw, uncompromising energy of Napalm Death will be used to activate a set of three specially created ceramic sound systems based on the group of vivid blue and yellow tiled tower blocks on the Bustleholme Mill estate, West Bromwich where I was born.”

Mark “Barney” Greenway, vocalist of Napalm Death:

"Sound as a weapon - or a weapon of change - is a very interesting concept and I think that the whole process of our sound gradually degrading clay sculptures is captivating. The noise element of music should never be understated and this event ar De La Warr Pavilion will hopefully demonstrate that music can do interesting things beyond the realms of clipped production techniques. On a personal level, particularly of interest to me is the fact that the sculptor Keith grew up around the very same area as me in Great Barr, Birmingham, and basing his sculptures around the tower blocks in that area brings back a lot of quirky memories mixed with the impressions of shameful deprivation in some of those places."

Bustleholme is a challenging and exciting proposition, a bringing together of artists operating at the outer limits of their respective genres to create a unique happening that pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.”

NAPALM DEATH – special performance

12th March, 2013

NAPALM DEATH – announce special one-off performance with artist Keith Harrison at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London on March 22, 2013!

Extreme metal and art – two worlds apart? Not for legendary grindcore outfit NAPALM DEATH who will collaborate with ceramic artist Keith Harrison in a one-off performance at the renowned V&A in London on March 22, 2013 starting at 7:30pm UK time. The band will play a special live set through an experimental sculptural sound system constructed by Harrison. Clad with ceramic tiles, the structures will potentially disintegrate as the performance progresses.
Mark “Barney” Greenway, vocalist of NAPALM DEATH states:

"Sound as a weapon - or a weapon of change - is a very interesting concept and I think that the whole process of our sound gradually degrading clay sculptures is captivating. The noise element of music should never be understated and this exhibition at the V&A will hopefully demonstrate that music can do interesting things beyond the realms of clipped production techniques.

Keith Harrison, V&A Ceramics Resident comments:

“My interest in NAPALM DEATH started in the late eighties when as a teenager in Birmingham I would listen to John Peel’s evening radio show when they would appear out of nowhere in jaw dropping fashion, sometimes for no more than a few seconds.

The raw, uncompromising energy of NAPALM DEATH will be used to activate a set of three specially created ceramic sound systems based on the group of vivid blue and yellow tiled tower blocks on the Bustleholm Mill estate, West Bromwich where I was born. I wanted to invite NAPALM DEATH to collaborate with me for this live performance at the Museum for the last of a series of Disruptions I have worked on throughout my residency.”

Ruth Lloyd, V&A Residency Co-ordinator adds:

“The V&A Residency Programme is public facing and aims to represent a wide range of audiences through artist led activities at the Museum. Past residents have staged events aimed at communities interested in poetry, sound art, architecture, design and contemporary craft. Harrison has led the V&A in developing a series of events aimed at heavy metal music and its fans.”

NAPALM DEATH to headline Obscene Extreme America 2013

13th December, 2012

No single band sums up the spirit of OBSCENE EXTREME more than Birmingham, England's genre-defying grindcore powerhouse.

Having dabbled with death metal, noisecore and even abrasive industrial across their incredible 33-year career, they prove more than any other band just how open we are to change, so long as it comes from that raw, diseased open wound we call a heart. And 2012's 'UTILITARIAN', like its predecessor 2009's 'TIME WAITS FOR NO SLAVE', continues to experiment with their many influences from DISCHARGE to KILLING JOKE pulling them apart and putting them back together to form a punishing new creation, all new, all grindcore!!!

Coming back to Mexico after four long years, prepare to go from enslavement to absolute obliteration in the pit of OBSCENE EXTREME AMERICA 2013

NAPALM DEATH to release split
with The Melvins

3rd October, 2012

Brummie grind legends Napalm Death will be releasing a split with oddballs The Melvins. Bassist Shane Embury commented: "We recently released a split with Converge and we’d love to do more of that kind of thing. It’s a great chance to work with bands we admire, and to play shows with some different people."

The split will include Napalm covering art rockers The Cardiacs. Continues Embury: "I’ve finally been able to do a cover of my favourite band, The Cardiacs. It’s a real old one called ‘To Go Off And Things’ from 'The Seaside'. I’m being a bit fussy with it as it’s a labour of love, but it’s sounding pretty crazy. I want to put it out as a download too, to try and raise some money for Tim Smith, who’s very ill at the moment. It breaks up the cycle of doing albums. We all want to get back to a bit of the vinyl thing we loved back in the day, and it gives us an opportunity to do something a bit more different."

NAPALM DEATH – new video clip

7th July, 2012

The leaders of the extreme and one of the most down to earth bands on this planet, NAPALM DEATH, recently released their latest offer “Utilitarian”. Music press hailed “Utilitarian” as masterpiece and one of the best NAPALM DEATH albums in the band history.
Now the band presents, in cooperation with ROCK HARD magazine (GER), a new video clip on the song “The Wolf I Feed”. The video was shot by Tim Fox (Tesseract, Skindread) and incorporates perfectly the meaning of the song. Singer Mark “Barney” Greenway explains the story behind “The Wolf I Feed”: “This is one of Mitch’s lyrics. It is about Armageddon ideology and the way this is used to drive populations sensitive towards religious dogma. When they can fear ‘The Great Satan’, that is of course a very powerful tool. It can be used to propagate everything from racial suspicion and superiority, to wars based around the dogmatic quest for moral purification.”

Split 7" EP with Converge coming soon

14th May, 2012

CLICK TO ENLARGE Legendary bands Converge and Napalm Death have come together for a split release, bridging the worlds of personal and politically driven extreme music.
Recorded as part of their new album sessions, Converge offer up the blazing new song "No Light Escapes". Already a staple of their live set, this whirlwind of an emotional charged song is a soon to be a discordant hardcore/metal anthem for the band. Also on the release, Converge offer a "We Are The World" styled rendition of the influential Entombed classic "Wolverine Blues". Joining them in tribute is a number of friends including Tomas Lindberg (Disfear, At The Gates, Lock Up), Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Split Cranium), Kevin Baker (APMD, The Hope Conspiracy), Brian Izzi (Trap Them), and more. A new Converge album will surface later in 2012 on Epitaph/Deathwish.
On the flip side, metal pioneers Napalm Death offer up two new aural monsters. First, "Will By Mouth" erupts in classic grind fashion. A buzz of brutal guitars and a crushing blast beat lay a foundation for Barney Greenway's vicious vocal attack. All of it uniquely bleeding together to paint a vivid picture of social unrest. Also on the release, Napalm Death offer the slower and textural new song "No Impediment To Triumph (Bhopal)". A deeply resonant number that lyrically sheds light on the horrific Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. Without question, "No Impediment…" is truly a powerful and poignant moment for this legendary band.
Split 7" EP will be self released by Converge and Napalm Death, exclusively Distributed by Deathwish Direct.

New album release date,
title and cover art!

4th November, 2011

CLICK TO ENLARGE NAPALM DEATH – Leaders of the extreme, genre founders and one of the hardest working/touring bands out there, legendary NAPALM DEATH, are currently giving the final touch to their 14th studio album (excluding the cover album “Leaders Not Followers). The new piece of brutality is named “Utilitarian” and hits stores on February 27th (USA February 28th) 2012, via the bands long time partner Century Media Records. The cover artwork perfectly fits the album theme and was done by the Danish artist Frode Sylthe, who also signed responsible for The Haunted`s amazing “Revolver” artwork.

Singer Mark “Barney” Greenway explains about the album title and concept: "After some deliberation, we have decided on “Utilitarian” as the album title. We generally try to avoid generic titles, and this seemed to have a lot of scope to it. I won't explain the full meaning of Utilitarianism here because it's an ethical theory, and as ethical theories go, the depth and debate around it is quite heavy at times. It has a certain 'morality' aspect to it and that isn't something that drives me, so I also certainly have issues with it. So, rather than just nail that straight to the mast, of course we wanted to put our own spin on it by suggesting that those (i.e. the utilitarian in us, perhaps) who try to challenge everything, or fight against conventions, well, we go through periods of real self-doubt where we wonder if we're really making a difference. I suppose the conclusion is that, for the sake of all our freedoms, you should never stop, as even the feeling of resistance is at least a signal to those who would like to entirely control and dominate us – meaning everything from our instinctive behavior to our human entitlement to walk the earth unprovoked. Regarding the album overall, the final creases should be ironed out fairly soon, and immediately after that we thought it would be good to top it off with a few UK dates. We’ve been playing one new song (“Quarantined”) out on a tour of Canada and it’s been well received, so we hope to perhaps throw in another one for now. Either way, we’ll be bouncing off the walls again near you very soon. Cheers all.”

NAPALM DEATH are already confirmed for the 2012 Wacken Open Air, Hellfest, Maryland Deathfest and many more. If you are an UK citizen, make sure to catch them on their year closing run in November/December and witness some of the new material live!

Re-sign worldwide deal with Century Media Records!

24th September, 2011

Century Media Records have renewed their deal with British grindcore legend NAPALM DEATH who has wrapped up the recordings of its yet untitled 14th studio album earlier this year at Parlour Studio in Kettering, UK with longtime producer Russ Russell.

Jens Prüter, Head of A&R / Century Media Records Europe states:

“NAPALM DEATH is not only one of the most important and influential extreme metal bands, they are also a band that always raises their voice against social ills – and even against record companies (remember “Enemy Of Music Business”). Therefore I’m even more glad about NAPALM DEATH re-signing to Century Media for more great albums of intelligent and meaningful noise. And have you ever seen a weak NAPALM DEATH show? I haven’t, and I have seen them MANY times and will never get tired to see them again and again. Thanks to Mitch, Danny, Shane and Barney for their resilience and resistance – and a special thanks to Marc from MAD for fighting on their side.”

NAPALM DEATH vocalist Mark 'Barney' Greenway comments:

"We're very happy to be re-signing to Century Media. In fact, I think it's the first time we've actually re-signed on a longer term deal with anybody since the days when we didn't strictly know that we could be digging ourselves a big hole with labels... It's important for Napalm to stay with an independent and Century proved to us with their overall enthusiasm and attention that this is where we needed to be. There's a perfect balance of getting the band out there in people's faces whilst still understanding the point that not everything is acceptable or 'ethical' promotion. It's more like working with friends who actually care, and who could argue with that?"

Renowned as one of the most reliable and hardest working bands in extreme music, NAPALM DEATH are currently on the road all across Russia, will head over to Canada in October and already confirmed appearances at the 2012 editions of Wacken (D), Neurotic Deathfest (NL) and Maryland Deathfest (USA).

So wherever you are, may grind be with you!

Barney performs guest vocals
on new SSS album

28th May, 2011

Barney comments on his guest appearance: "Foxy really knows his musical onions and when he had some parts for me to do, I knew it was going to be a gas. The main part had a Discharge-y feel to it, so I was sold on that instantly. Went in, shouted, went home. No fucking about. Good stuff."

"Legacy Was Yesterday"

Legacy Was Yesterday is the title of newest song since 2009's "Time Waits for No Slave". It was recorded at Rapture Audio with James Walford and mastered by Russ Russell.

"Legacy Was Yesterday"

(Music: Shane Embury / Lyrics: Shane Embury / Mark "Barney" Greenway)

Sealed maze of confusion
The mind is perplexed
Faith in the life you choose
A stake in being yourself
Who else can you be?
What else can you be?
True to yourself and forge ahead
And deal with the fucking consequences

By turns we are bemused
We will be stretched taut and ordered
Give a thousand apologies
Trying to work through the guilt
Lashed down to this legacy that was yesterday
Old friend, you’re reviving the pettiness of all the worst memories

From minefield of childhood
to melting pot of frailty
Didn't we grow up?
Or did we just grow apart?
Always looking back - why be so afraid?
Be True to yourself and forge ahead

By turns we are bemused
We will be stretched taut and ordered
Give a thousand apologies
Trying to work through the guilt
Tripping through this legacy that was yesterday
Old friend, you’re reviving the pettiness of all the worst memories
Persisting in this legacy that was yesterday
