NAPALM DEATH – announce special one-off performance with artist Keith Harrison at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London on March 22, 2013!
Extreme metal and art – two worlds apart? Not for legendary grindcore outfit NAPALM DEATH who will collaborate with ceramic artist Keith Harrison in a one-off performance at the renowned V&A in London on March 22, 2013 starting at 7:30pm UK time. The band will play a special live set through an experimental sculptural sound system constructed by Harrison. Clad with ceramic tiles, the structures will potentially disintegrate as the performance progresses.
Mark “Barney” Greenway, vocalist of NAPALM DEATH states:
"Sound as a weapon - or a weapon of change - is a very interesting concept and I think that the whole process of our sound gradually degrading clay sculptures is captivating. The noise element of music should never be understated and this exhibition at the V&A will hopefully demonstrate that music can do interesting things beyond the realms of clipped production techniques. On a personal level, particularly of interest to me is the fact that the sculptor Keith grew up around the very same area as me in Great Barr, Birmingham, and basing his sculptures around the tower blocks in that area brings back a lot of quirky memories mixed with the impressions of shameful deprivation in some of those places."
Keith Harrison, V&A Ceramics Resident comments:
“My interest in NAPALM DEATH started in the late eighties when as a teenager in Birmingham I would listen to John Peel’s evening radio show when they would appear out of nowhere in jaw dropping fashion, sometimes for no more than a few seconds.
The raw, uncompromising energy of NAPALM DEATH will be used to activate a set of three specially created ceramic sound systems based on the group of vivid blue and yellow tiled tower blocks on the Bustleholm Mill estate, West Bromwich where I was born. I wanted to invite NAPALM DEATH to collaborate with me for this live performance at the Museum for the last of a series of Disruptions I have worked on throughout my residency.”
Ruth Lloyd, V&A Residency Co-ordinator adds:
“The V&A Residency Programme is public facing and aims to represent a wide range of audiences through artist led activities at the Museum. Past residents have staged events aimed at communities interested in poetry, sound art, architecture, design and contemporary craft. Harrison has led the V&A in developing a series of events aimed at heavy metal music and its fans.”

No single band sums up the spirit of OBSCENE EXTREME more than Birmingham, England's genre-defying grindcore powerhouse.Having dabbled with death metal, noisecore and even abrasive industrial across their incredible 33-year career, they prove more than any other band just how open we are to change, so long as it comes from that raw, diseased open wound we call a heart. And 2012's 'UTILITARIAN', like its predecessor 2009's 'TIME WAITS FOR NO SLAVE', continues to experiment with their many influences from DISCHARGE to KILLING JOKE pulling them apart and putting them back together to form a punishing new creation, all new, all grindcore!!!
Coming back to Mexico after four long years, prepare to go from enslavement to absolute obliteration in the pit of OBSCENE EXTREME AMERICA 2013

Brummie grind legends Napalm Death will be releasing a split with oddballs The Melvins. Bassist Shane Embury commented: "We recently released a split with Converge and we’d love to do more of that kind of thing. It’s a great chance to work with bands we admire, and to play shows with some different people."The split will include Napalm covering art rockers The Cardiacs. Continues Embury: "I’ve finally been able to do a cover of my favourite band, The Cardiacs. It’s a real old one called ‘To Go Off And Things’ from 'The Seaside'. I’m being a bit fussy with it as it’s a labour of love, but it’s sounding pretty crazy. I want to put it out as a download too, to try and raise some money for Tim Smith, who’s very ill at the moment. It breaks up the cycle of doing albums. We all want to get back to a bit of the vinyl thing we loved back in the day, and it gives us an opportunity to do something a bit more different."

"MK Ondergrond" (meaning "Underground" in Afrikaans) conducted an interview with vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway of British grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH at this year's Wacken Open Air festival, which took place August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany. You can watch the chat below (Note: The intro is in Afrikaans, but the interview was conducted in English)."MK Ondergrond" is South Africa's first dedicated underground music variety show, hosted by a macabre crew of animated characters, featuring band interviews, video reviews, gig guides and the best in local and international underground music videos.
NAPALM DEATH's latest album, "Utilitarian" sold around 2,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD debuted at No. 14 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
NAPALM DEATH's previous album, 2009's "Time Waits For No Slave", opened with around 1,800 units to land at No. 19 on the Heatseekers chart.
"Utilitarian" was released on February 27 in Europe and February 28 in North America via the band's longtime partner, Century Media Records. The cover artwork (see below) perfectly fits the album's theme and was created by the Danish artist Frode Sylthe, who is also responsible for THE HAUNTED's "rEVOLVEr" artwork.

The leaders of the extreme and one of the most down to earth bands on this planet, NAPALM DEATH, recently released their latest offer “Utilitarian”. Music press hailed “Utilitarian” as masterpiece and one of the best NAPALM DEATH albums in the band history.
Now the band presents, in cooperation with ROCK HARD magazine (GER), a new video clip on the song “The Wolf I Feed”. The video was shot by Tim Fox (Tesseract, Skindread) and incorporates perfectly the meaning of the song. Singer Mark “Barney” Greenway explains the story behind “The Wolf I Feed”: “This is one of Mitch’s lyrics. It is about Armageddon ideology and the way this is used to drive populations sensitive towards religious dogma. When they can fear ‘The Great Satan’, that is of course a very powerful tool. It can be used to propagate everything from racial suspicion and superiority, to wars based around the dogmatic quest for moral purification.”

Legendary bands Converge and Napalm Death have come together for a split release, bridging the worlds of personal and politically driven extreme music.
Recorded as part of their new album sessions, Converge offer up the blazing new song "No Light Escapes". Already a staple of their live set, this whirlwind
of an emotional charged song is a soon to be a discordant hardcore/metal anthem for the band. Also on the release, Converge offer a "We Are The World" styled
rendition of the influential Entombed classic "Wolverine Blues". Joining them in tribute is a number of friends including Tomas Lindberg (Disfear, At The Gates,
Lock Up), Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Split Cranium), Kevin Baker (APMD, The Hope Conspiracy), Brian Izzi (Trap Them), and more. A new Converge album will
surface later in 2012 on Epitaph/Deathwish.
On the flip side, metal pioneers Napalm Death offer up two new aural monsters. First, "Will By Mouth" erupts in classic grind fashion. A buzz of brutal guitars and a
crushing blast beat lay a foundation for Barney Greenway's vicious vocal attack. All of it uniquely bleeding together to paint a vivid picture of social unrest. Also on the
release, Napalm Death offer the slower and textural new song "No Impediment To Triumph (Bhopal)". A deeply resonant number that lyrically sheds light on the horrific Bhopal
Gas Tragedy of 1984. Without question, "No Impediment…" is truly a powerful and poignant moment for this legendary band.
Split 7" EP will be self released by Converge and Napalm Death, exclusively Distributed by Deathwish Direct.

(Music: Shane Embury / Lyrics: Shane Embury / Mark "Barney" Greenway)
Sealed maze of confusion
The mind is perplexed
Faith in the life you choose
A stake in being yourself
Who else can you be?
What else can you be?
True to yourself and forge ahead
And deal with the fucking consequences
By turns we are bemused
We will be stretched taut and ordered
Give a thousand apologies
Trying to work through the guilt
Lashed down to this legacy that was yesterday
Old friend, you’re reviving the pettiness of all the worst memories
From minefield of childhood
to melting pot of frailty
Didn't we grow up?
Or did we just grow apart?
Always looking back - why be so afraid?
Be True to yourself and forge ahead
By turns we are bemused
We will be stretched taut and ordered
Give a thousand apologies
Trying to work through the guilt
Tripping through this legacy that was yesterday
Old friend, you’re reviving the pettiness of all the worst memories
Persisting in this legacy that was yesterday
